Baldwin girls win 4A state title; Ottawa boys second

Morgan Lober and the Baldwin High girls track and field team won the Class 4A state championship Saturday in Wichita.

? Three years ago, Baldwin’s Katie Kehl had to sit anxiously during the final race — the 4X400 relay — before learning her team had won a state title.

There was no such drama Saturday.

The Baldwin girls convincingly took the 4A girls title with 84 points, which was 17 points better than second-place Paola.

It was the third state championship for the Baldwin girls in the last four years.

“That was our goal the whole year. We wanted to win state,” the senior Kehl said. “We knew we could do it.”

Kehl took her second gold of the weekend Saturday, as she won the shot put with a toss of 43 feet, 9.5 inches.

The turning point for the Bulldogs, though, might have come in the 400. Junior Morgan Lober made a comeback over the final straightaway, taking first with a time of 58.04 seconds. That was eight-hundredths of a second better than Winfield’s Courtney Griffiths.

“I hate to say this, but I was really close to giving up at the end, because I was like, ‘I can’t get her,'” Lober said. “Then I was finally like, ‘I got it.’ It was a really good feeling.”

Glenn Kelley McCabe also took third in the 400, which gave Baldwin 16 team points and a comfortable lead over Paola.

Lober, Elena Watson, Kaitlyn Barnes and McCabe combined to win the 4X400 with a time of 4:05.08, while the 4×800-meter relay team of Hannah Hutton, Lober, Fayth Peterson and Barnes also took second (9:51.09).

Among other area teams, Ottawa’s Dallas Natt won the boys triple jump with a top mark of 48 feet, 4.25 inches. The Cyclones placed second overall in Class 4A boys with 48 points.

Mill Valley senior Emily Brigham finished second in the Class 5A girls long jump. Brigham’s 18-foot, 8-5-inch jump was second only to Emporia senior Oasis Hernandez (18-09.25).

“It was a tough field this year,” Brigham said. “They’re all really good competitors and I was excited to compete with them today.”

Also, Perry Lecompton’s boys 4×400-meter relay team of Colin Coleman, Riley Davis, Seth Surface and William Hinrichsen cruised to a 4A state title in the event with a time of 3:26.32.
