40 years ago: Tentative plans made for Clinton Lake development

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 25, 1973:

  • Land use plans for the Clinton Lake area were beginning to take shape. City and county officials today gave informal approval of the direction of planning, which suggested suburban development on the northeast side of the lake but retention of most current agricultural use in the lake area.
  • A mobile home at 2200 Harper had suffered damage totaling $7,000 in a fire this morning. Residents Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Self told firefighters that a child in the house might have turned the kitchen stove on, causing a pan with its contents to overheat and start the blaze.
  • Lawrence High School graduate John Hird was named the recipient of the Journal-World Scholarship for 1973. Hird had won the award for his work as a newspaper carrier and his academic achievement during his years at LHS.
