More than 3,000 Douglas County Wester Energy customers lost power around 2:30 a.m. Friday after a vehicle struck a utility pole, according to Westar Energy spokeswoman Erin La Row.

The incident occurred in the 1100 block of W. 24th Street, just off of Naismith Drive and near Campus Court Apartments, La Row said. The impact of the crash broke the pole, which required replacement.

By 3:45 a.m., power had been restored to all but 500 customers, and by 8:30 a.m., all outages resulting from the incident had been restored, La Row said.

The outage primarily affected an area on Naismith Drive, west to Iowa Street and between 20th and 31st streets.

Police responding to the scene found an unoccupied 2007 Chevrolet pickup associated with the accident. Officers are still investigating the incident, said Kim Murphree, a Lawrence Police Department spokeswoman.

3,000 people. Usually it is just the citizens of Dogtown who are effected by the drunks and fools who can't drive on a 3-lane, "curvy" road without painted center lines. We have the damage to our yards, vehicles, and even to city property such as signs, fire hydrants etc. Just another night in Dogtown only 3,000 people this time.

I noticed some of my electronics had reset this morning. I would like to point out this is the second time in a year that my power has gone out because of somebody hitting a utility pole. I live on a cursed section of the grid.
