40 years ago: KU police investigate recent sexual assaults on campus

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 20, 1973:

  • The Security and Parking Division at Kansas University this week was investigating four separate incidents on KU women on a recent Monday night. Two women had reported being raped, one outside Dyche Hall at about 9:30 p.m. and the other near the Endowment Association building at 7:45. Two other women reported having been molested, one near Dyche and one near Douthart Hall. Although the women had given descriptions of the assailants, investigators did not yet know how many attackers had been involved in the incidents.
  • Experiments by KU researchers and many others tied to the new Skylab project were on hold as astronauts and engineers worked to launch a repair mission for the overheated space station. Project engineers had hoped to install a sun shield on the orbiting vehicle to replace a thermal shield that had ripped off earlier, causing the outer skin to absorb the sun’s rays and the interior to become overly warm.
