25 years ago: Penn House overflows with donations
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 17, 1988:
- Workers at Penn House, 1035 Pennsylvania, were finding out what it was to have too much of a good thing. Donors had gotten into the habit of dropping off items outside of business hours, and workers were arriving to find the donations “mixed with trash, cluttering the entrance and blowing in the wind,” according to an article today. Penn House, wishing to be a good neighbor to the surrounding homes, was politely requesting that generous people limit their donation times to the building’s hours of operation.
- A consultant recently hired by the City of Lawrence said that there was plenty of demand for an 18-hole municipal golf course. However, the city would probably have to subsidize the first few years of a course’s operation, the consultant said. About 20 people had gathered at South Park Recreation Center this week to hear a preliminary report from Paul Osmundson, a market analyst for THK Associates.
