From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 10, 1988:
- Three Lawrence school board members said this week that they were hesitant to support a recent recommendation to construct a second building, possibly in west Lawrence, for Lawrence High School. In the board's first discussion of the late April recommendation from the Secondary Schools Facilities Task Force, the dissenting board members expressed concerns that the plan wouldn't address the problem of limited participation in extracurricular activities. Other members supported the recommendation to split the school between two buildings, saying that Lawrence probably wasn't ready for two separate high schools.
- The school board also voted 6-0 at their meeting to direct their attorney to purchase land at Grant School despite protests from parents. Board members said that it was better to own the land than to lease it, but Grant parent Jim Scheurich said that the board didn't have reason to purchase the land unless they were willing to sell it.
