40 years ago: Topeka barbers raise prices, but Lawrence to remain unchanged

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 6, 1973:

  • A news brief today informed residents that although Topeka barbers were raising their prices, the charge for a Lawrence haircut was to remain the same. Topeka barbers were raising their fee from $2.75 to $3. The Journal-World had conducted a quick survey of six Lawrence barbershops this morning, but none of the barbers questioned had heard of any price increase. The charge for a Lawrence haircut by a barber was still $2.50.
  • The city’s annual Art in the Park festival was scheduled for the upcoming weekend in South Park — unless it rained, in which case the event was to be postponed until the following weekend. The year before, 1972, had been the first time in 11 years that the art event had been moved inside (to the Community Building) because of bad weather. Approximately 9,000 people had attended in spite of the relocation. However, this year, the show would not be moved indoors no matter what, organizers said.
