25 years ago: Lawrence’s All Star Dairy to close in June

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 6, 1988:

Rumors were confirmed this morning that the All Star Dairy in Lawrence was to close. The CEO of Country Farms Dairies, which owned the plant, said today that the company would “phase down the processing of milk in the All Star facility at Lawrence, Kansas.” He added that dairy products that had been processed in Lawrence were to be processed in the Kansas City and Wichita plants in the future. The final day of production in Lawrence was scheduled for June 10. Country Farms Dairies was scheduled to open negotiations with Teamsters Local 552, which represented about 75 percent of the plant’s employees, to discuss transfer possibilities. The firm’s CEO declined to say how many employees would be offered transfers or whether only union workers would be invited to work at the other plants.
