From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 2, 1988:

• Lawrence’s three Kansas House members this week voted against a bill that would have moved Washburn University’s financing from the State Board of Education to the Kansas Board of Regents. The bill, which had lost on a 65-60 vote, eventually could have led to Washburn becoming a state university and possibly cutting into Kansas University’s share of state funding.
• Four county-owned houses on the east side of the 1100 block of Rhode Island Street were now living under a deadline. Bids for the removal or demolition of the structures at 1108, 1112, 1114, and 1116 R.I. were to be opened on May 19. The county was then to give successful bidders 60 calendar days, or until July 18, to move or raze the houses and clean up the debris. Successful bidders were to post a $250 performance bond to guarantee the houses would be gone within the time limit. “Otherwise this could get strung out for months, and I’d hate to see that happen,” said Commission Chair David Hopper.
