25 years ago: Jayhawks head to Silverdome for next NCAA round

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 21, 1988:

  • Kansas University was continuing to the next stage of the NCAA tournament after a victory over Murray State, 61-58, in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Jayhawks were to face Vanderbilt on the upcoming Friday in the Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan. It was the third year in a row that KU had made it to the Sweet Sixteen. Local fans were finding that there weren’t many seats left on flights from Kansas City to Detroit, according to local travel agents. “The problem is that KU and K-State are both playing up there so you’ve got people from Manhattan, Lawrence and Kansas City just flocking up there,” said Jon Tadtman of the Travel Center today.
  • The basketball team wasn’t the only group of KU athletes reaching for glory this week. The KU rowers had won the sixth annual Heart of Texas Regatta over the weekend, defeating the University of Texas and Tulane for their fourth consecutive overall title.
