From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 10, 1988:

Lawrence city commissioners voted 4-0 this week to pay $238,000 to Black & Veatch Engineers-Architects, Kansas City, Mo., for a study of sanitary sewers in the Kansas River watershed, an area that comprised about a third of the city. The study, which was expected to be completed by the end of 1988, was to create a computer model of the current system, identify problem areas, and make recommendations for improvement.

Super Tuesday primaries this week had put then-Vice President George Bush within reach of the Republican presidential nomination. Democrats Michael Dukakis, Jesse Jackson, and Albert Gore Jr. were in an apparent three-man race after the votes were counted. Supporters of Bob Dole’s presidential bid were still hopeful about his chances even after Bush voters had delivered wins in all of the Super Tuesday states.
