From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 9, 1973:

• A last-minute change of flight plans may have saved the life of Lawrence soldier Pfc. Scott Belt. Belt, stationed at Ft. Bragg, had told his parents he was planning to fly home for the weekend on an Army transport plane. Tragically, the plane had later crashed in North Carolina, killing 14 persons on board, and Belt’s family had reportedly been “frantic” until they heard from him saying that he had changed his mind, deciding to save his leave time for a longer vacation later.
• A bill allowing airlines to give away liquor on their flights operating in Kansas was approved today by the Senate Federal and State Affairs Committee. The bill, which had the endorsement of Vern Miller, was a rival to one passed in the Senate. The bills were an attempt to exempt carriers from the state’s constitutional ban on the “open saloon.”
