Tongie girls fall at state

— Tonganoxie High’s girls basketball team couldn’t overcome a slow start in a 55-38 loss to Paola in the opening round of the Class 4A state tournament Thursday.

The sixth-seeded Chieftains (15-8) came out flat on offense, shooting just 6-of-30 in the first half. The third-seeded Panthers (19-4) took advantage, jumping to a 20-point lead at the break, 34-14.

Senior Jenny Whitledge recorded a double-double, scoring 15 points and pulling down 14 rebounds.
