The Royals played without Eric Hosmer, who was summoned by the U.S. to replace the injured Mark Teixeira in the World Baseball Classic. Billy Butler started in his place at first base.
Trevor Cahill allowed a run on six hits in 22⁄3 innings for the Diamondbacks. Former Royals first baseman Kila Ka’aihue drove in their only run with a single in the sixth inning.
