25 years ago: County clerk predicting jump in voter registration

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 4, 1988:

Douglas County Clerk Patty Jaimes said yesterday that 1988 might be a banner year for local voter registration. Although the total of registered voters was still far below the record numbers that had registered just prior to the 1984 presidential elections, interest was definitely building. Jaimes said that there were currently 31,270 registered voters in the county, including 24,166 Lawrence residents. By party affiliation, there were 7,750 Democrats, 12,173 Republicans, and 11,347 undeclared county voters. These totals were still 21 percent below the numbers for the 1984 election, when voters were at an all-time high of 38,799. However, Jaimes was anticipating that it would meet or exceed that amount this year, with “probably over 40,000” being her prediction. “Sometime in September we’ll take registrations up at the university and it is not unusual to get two or three hundred in a day’s time,” she added.
