Tonganoxie 62, Atchison 36

Tonganoxie — The Tonganoxie High girls earned their first basketball state bid in six years Saturday with a 62-36 victory against Atchison in a Class 4A sub-state championship game on their home floor.

The fourth-seeded Chieftains (15-7) jumped to a 19-10 lead after one quarter and extended their advantage to 14 at halftime, 30-16. The lead grew to 19 midway through the third quarter, but second-seeded AHS (15-7) used a 12-2 run to get back within nine with 7:30 left.

That’s as close as it got, though, as THS outscored its opponent by a 23-6 margin the rest of the way to punch its first state ticket since the 2006-07 season.

Tonganoxie’s Jenny Whitledge recorded her second straight double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds — both game-highs. Emily Soetaert joined Whitledge in double figures with 14 points. Arika Smith and Madison Sanders led Atchison with 15 and 10 points, respectively.
