Area basketball roundup: Tonganoxie girls advance to 4A state tourney

Tonganoxie 62, Atchison 36

Tonganoxie — The Tonganoxie High girls earned their first basketball state bid in six years Saturday with a 62-36 victory against Atchison in a Class 4A sub-state championship game on their home floor.

The fourth-seeded Chieftains (15-7) jumped to a 19-10 lead after one quarter and extended their advantage to 14 at halftime, 30-16. The lead grew to 19 midway through the third quarter, but second-seeded AHS (15-7) used a 12-2 run to get back within nine with 7:30 left.

That’s as close as it got, though, as THS outscored its opponent by a 23-6 margin the rest of the way to punch its first state ticket since the 2006-07 season.

Tonganoxie’s Jenny Whitledge recorded her second straight double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds — both game-highs. Emily Soetaert joined Whitledge in double figures with 14 points. Arika Smith and Madison Sanders led Atchison with 15 and 10 points, respectively.

Ottawa — Paola held off a late challenge to defeat Baldwin and advance to the state tournament.

Paola (18-4), the top-seeded team in the Ottawa 4A girls sub-state, jumped on Baldwin (24-8) early, building a 18-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Carbondale — Mill Valley earned a spot in the Class 5A boys state tournament with a victory over Kansas City Washington in the sub-state championship game.

Nathan Stacy scored 22 points to lead Mill Valley.

Mill Valley (18-3) will open play in state on Thursday at Topeka.
