40 years ago: County to take over ambulance service

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 2, 1973:

  • An agreement was announced this week between Lawrence and Douglas County for the county to negotiate to provide a new ambulance service. The county was to provide all equipment for the new operator and was planning to buy the equipment from the present operator of the ambulance service. The city’s participation was to be limited to providing the building at 1839 Massachusetts and participating in the purchase of another ambulance, which was to be bought with matching funds from the federal government.
  • The Kansas Senate this week passed a death penalty bill that would make the death sentence mandatory for all convictions of first-degree murder. The 24-15 approval of the bill had followed a heated, emotional debate on the Senate floor. The bill was an attempt to reinstate the death penalty which had been struck down the previous year by the U.S. Supreme Court as unconstitutional.
