The Lawrence Chamber of Commerce board of directors is endorsing a proposed $92.5 million bond issue for the Lawrence school district.

The board voted unanimously earlier this week to support the proposal.

"The Chamber recognizes that investment in our public school system is not only vital for developing a strong sense of community, but it also serves as a critical component in attracting and retaining new business in the region," the board said in a written statement.

The school district is seeking voter approval to issue $92.5 million in new bonds to pay for building upgrades and expansions at the 14 elementary schools, as well as districtwide technology improvements and expansion of the district's career and technical education programs.

Most of the money for building improvements would focus on the six older buildings in east and central Lawrence to bring them up to the same standards as newer buildings in west Lawrence.

"We particularly endorse the school district's commitment to building a workforce development center," the Chamber board said in the statement. "This is an excellent start to bring technical training to Lawrence."

Voters in the Lawrence district will decide on the bond proposal at the April 2 general election.

A Chamber endorsement is the kiss of death for me. There pretty much has to be something wrong with it if they favor it.

Good call. Improving schools is an important part of economic development but particularly with the tech ed portion of this bond issue, it makes sense that the Chamber would support the effort.

to bad they put all the loopholes in the bond so the can spend the $ on anything they want instead of what they say. Easy NO vote for me

Upon what do you base this assumption? I don't believe this is remotely true, but it is designed simply to make people angry and not consider the actual details of the bond. Our local elementary schools are suffering from decades of neglect, and the bond will fix that. Our school building (both old and new) leak energy, and the bond will fix that, conserving about $290,000 in our tax dollars. Our schools need a consistent technology backbone in all buildings, and the bond will provide that. If you are going to speak against the bond, or any issue, please uses actual facts to make your case.

There is a fine line between sanity and insanity. I think the school board may have just crossed it. Let's take a look at the total public expenses planned so far that we know about that are major:

$92.5 million for school bonds $50.0 million for the police HQ $25.0 million for the rec center $16.0 million for the new water treatment plant $54.7 million for the new sewage treatment plant

$188 million for all the "improvements"... for a city of 60,000. With a per capita income less than Manhattan, KS.

I mean SERIOUSLY?? You close and consolidate schools for budget and capacity issues and now you're voting to EXPAND??? Insanity...

You are right, however my point still remains valid. This is a tremendous amount of money. Must be nice not to worry about footing the bill for these "improvements" right?

Yes, one of the 10 people who actually go to these meetings. Sorry, I have a life..

What over crowded school did students go to when Centennial was closed, what over crowded school(S) did students go to when Wakarusa go was closed, and East Hills hasn't been mentioned? The Old School board, with the district's encouragement, called that consolidation, I think.

If the Chamber endorsed bond issue, I will now vote against it. It's obviously bad for average taxpayer.

Looks like the Chamber got a couple of new memberships from the Leadership in the School system, now they are best buddies. Does not pass the smell test.

The bond looks like a huge pig, it's called a pork barrel. With three perfectly good schools sitting unused, voters are being asked to raise the city's debt by $92.2 million so they can ADD classrooms to other schools? C'mon get real. When you spend $6 Million on one school and four blocks away is a perfectly good facility, one must ask does anyone understand resource management, or is all about, me too?

Its so darn funny to watch the schizophrenic nature of so many in Lawrence. Perfect example are those upset with the Lawrence Chamber supporting the school bond and therefore not willing to vote for the school bond. Of course the reason being the Chamber supports a zero income tax for the state and their ties to the evil Koch brothers. Well I am going to make it all better for you to support the the Lawrence Chamber and the school bond by a highly kept secret from those in Lawrence. The Lawrence Chamber of Commerce isn't a member of the Kansas State Chamber of Commerce. So now you can feel good again to support and vote for this ridiculous school bond and all of the other government tax payer projects that fuel the Lawrence economy. It won't be tax cuts from the Kansas Legislature that crush the people of Lawrence, it will be the crushing debt of our city spending. schizophrenia is a horrible state of mind.

Common symptoms include auditory hallucinations, paranoid or bizarre delusions, or disorganized speech and thinking, and it is accompanied by significant social or occupational dysfunction. The onset of symptoms typically occurs in young adulthood, with a global lifetime prevalence!

They are still a chamber, therefore their only interest is what is good for them. I will never vote for anything a chamber endorses. Same reason I will never vote to elect anyone with ties to any chamber.

The Chamber of phonies and fake people has not changed since they endorsed the last bond issue.
