Kansas coach Bill Self received a fine and public reprimand from the NCAA on Wednesday morning because of "misconduct" during the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

Specifically, Self damaged the LED scorers table when he hit it with his hand during KU's 70-58 victory over North Carolina on March 24 at Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo.

Self issued a statement on the matter: "After shooting 25 percent (7-for-28 field goals, 0-for-6 threes), scoring 21 points and 12 turnovers in the first half, my emotions got the best of me."

NCAA guidelines define misconduct as “any act of dishonesty, unsportsmanlike conduct, unprofessional behavior or breach of law, occurring from the time the championship field is announced through the end of the championship that discredits the event or intercollegiate athletics.”

"Coach Self’s actions were out of line with the committee’s expectations that championship participants act in a manner that represents the highest standards of sportsmanship,” said Ron Wellman, athletic director at Wake Forest and chair of the Div. I men’s basketball committee.

Yeah, it really stinks that he is bringing hardware and positive national attention to Lawrence. The sooner he leaves the better. I can't wait for some .500 seasons, making the NCAA tourney every three years, and finishing in the middle of the pack in the Big 12. Yeah, winning the conference every year is awful. Coach Self has gotta go.

The trouble is that all those things, the original poster is probably rooting for them. Also the demise of KU basketball entirely, and the failure of the university as a whole.

I've seen coaches throw their jackets in the stands, stomp right in front of the officials, etc. that is widely seen on TV yet probably don't get a fine or reprimand. This is no big deal and didn't even warrant a "T." Good for Bill, I wouldn't want a coach with absolutely no passion during a game like Fred Hoiberg.

Whats with the nitpicking against KU? Is this all just because we didn't lose to Iowa State or other 'lesser teams'?

I'll pay the damn fine. Memo to Ron Wellman: take a hike.

Brian Bosworth was right.

Is this all the NCAA has to do?

Self could have hit himself in the head......... instead. After all HIS team was not responding to his coaching in the first half of this game.

If any of us were sitting at that table perhaps we might have discovered it was not that much fun. Supposing a staff person were injured as a result of Self's action? What then?

So how much damage did he actually do? This seems a little overboard---wasn't like he purposely broke something, did he?

Self was fined but this great piece of journalism does not reveal how much.

Just once, I want to see a coach get really fired up and stomp onto the court and just hammer-punt a ref in the balls. Then sort of prance around the court strutting with a smile, "Oh yes I did," kinda look.

That would really be funny.

Well, if a coach really does do something like that, I hope he leaves the court wearing a matching set of state issued bracelets. (And please, don't let him be the coach of any team I cheer for).

It is too bad that the NCAA doesn't actually hold those standards as a steadfast rule. Not saying what self did didn't deserve a fine but some of the stuff that has happened on the field of play and what coaches have done didn't get much of a fine in comparison. If they fine him for that then please take seriously the cheap shots that are done.
