40 years ago: Clinton reservoir vital for future water needs, official says

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 15, 1973:

A. J. “Andy” Gray, Kansas highway director, was pictured today standing with Ken Rowen, Clinton Reservoir project director, as the two stood at the new lookout above the Clinton dam project watching the construction activity. While watching trucks haul away trees from the future floor of the reservoir, Gray spoke about his contributions to the project. “All I did was put my shoulder to the wheel and give it a nudge,” he said. “I called the engineers a few names and played games with Congress and eventually we got a meeting of the minds.” Gray said that the area had very demanding water needs and that there was “no question” that the area between Lawrence and Topeka would be populated in 10 or 20 years. The Clinton Reservoir was under construction about four miles southwest of Lawrence.
