40 years ago: Facelift planned for Eldridge House

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 10, 1973:

  • A facelift had been scheduled for the Eldridge House, Seventh and Massachusetts. A $400,000 renovation project on the exterior and interior and a $50,000 restaurant and club renovation were scheduled for the hotel, according to Andy Galyardt, a spokesperson for Rockledge Investment, Inc., owners of the building. Twelve additional apartment units were planned, which would complete the conversion of all the old hotel rooms to apartments. Galyardt said that the company wanted to create a downtown apartment house that would provide “security, pleasant surroundings and good maintenance for those who want a nice, quiet living arrangement.” Single rooms were to be available, as well as apartments with one, two, or three bedrooms and one six-room apartment.
  • It was reported this week that the Lawrence Paper Company was negotiating to purchase the perpetual lease interest and buildings of the Bowersock Mill and Power Co. on the city-owned land at the northeast corner of Sixth and Massachusetts. Representatives from Bowersock and the paper company said that negotiations were under way and that a sale agreement was anticipated “in a short time.”
