From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 10, 1988:

• A Lawrence man’s first try at playing the lottery had paid off nicely. Robert Lagerstrom, 26, said that his first-ever purchase of a Kansas Lottery ticket had netted a $10,000 prize — about $7,600 after taxes. “I didn’t even start off to buy a ticket,” said Lagerstrom, who had stopped at the Kwik Shop at Ninth and Mississippi to buy some gas on the way home from a late shift at a local cleaning service. “I was going to buy a slice of pizza and they didn’t have any made. So I decided to buy a ticket…. It was just one of those deals when you say heck, I’ll just try it once.” Remembering the ensuing heart-racing excitement of rushing home to tell his wife and then call relatives, Lagerstrom mused, “I’m glad this happens only once in a lifetime. I don’t think I can handle it again.” He added that he didn’t yet know what he wanted to do with the money but that he was “kind of daydreaming about a car.”
• A cold front producing record low temperatures had arrived in Lawrence. The overnight low had been 50 degrees, which had broken the record of 52 set in 1930 and tied in 1937 and 1962. It had gotten even colder in Topeka, where the official reading at Billard Airport had been 43, breaking all previous records there. More June-like weather was in store for the area, with today’s high expected to reach into the 80s.
