25 years ago: Old fraternity house razed for new structure
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 9, 1988:
- Workers this week began the demolishing the 65-year-old Phi Delta Theta house at 1621 Edgehill to make room for a 26,000-square-foot replacement. The new house, which was forecast to cost $2.15 million to construct and furnish, had been planned after maintenance on the existing house had become too expensive. Officials had also cited continuing problems with meeting fire-safety requirements in the old house. Fraternity members were to live in Jayhawker Towers during the year of construction.
- The City of Lawrence had opened a new nature walk to the public this week. The five-foot-wide path wound through the 15-acre Viola and Conrad McGrew Nature Preserve in west Lawrence. Elsewhere in Lawrence, a McLouth construction company had begun work on Phase III of planned improvements at the new “Dad” Perry Park near Monterey Way and Harvard Road.
