From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 6, 1988:

• A statewide epidemic of runaway teens was reported over the weekend, with more than 100 youths throughout Kansas reported as missing. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was not able to provide more information this morning, but a Lawrence police detective said that the number included seven young people between the ages of 14 and 17 who were reported missing from their Lawrence homes over the weekend, with four remaining unaccounted for this morning. Among the missing was a 17-year-old boy who had left home without permission on Friday and had not yet returned, a 16-year-old boy that had been reported missing after midnight on Sunday, a 16-year-old girl whose family was relocating from the area and who was reported to have run away because she did not want to move with them, and a 14-year-old boy.
• Judge James Paddock and Scott Courtney, district court administrator, told Douglas County commissioners this week that a third floor was a high priority for the judicial building. A fifth division of Douglas County District Court was inevitable in the next five years, they said, and the county had to come up with room to fit it into the building. However, commissioners said they doubted voters would approve a bond issue to build a third floor.
