From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 4, 1973:

Over 100 alumni of Vinland High School visited the small town this week to celebrate class reunions. Of the groups represented, the Class of 1923 won the prize for best attendance, with seven of its 10 graduating members arriving for their 50th anniversary celebration. “It was just a typical class,” said ’23 grad Floyd Talley, a DeSoto resident who had retired after a 43-year teaching career. However, his reminiscences showed that the class was slightly less typical than today’s high-school classes. For one thing, the high school had burned down that year, and classes had been held in a church. In his speech on Class of ’23 history, Talley also recalled the girls of that year holding a mass skip day in protest of the boys having been excused from classes to help a local farmer harvest his pear crop. In a more famous incident, the girls of ’23 had started a petition for shorter skirts (with a hem ending at the knee), but their request had been turned down by the Board of Education, whose members approved a rule that skirts could be no shorter than three inches below the knee.
