40 years ago: New administrator named for LMH

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 27, 1973:

  • Donald W. Lenz, assistant administrator of St. Elizabeth Hospital in Granite City, Illinois, had been named administrator of Lawrence Memorial Hospital this week. Lenz had been selected from more than 70 applicants for the job, which had become available following the resignation of Charles Denniston, who had left LMH to accept a hospital job in Wisconsin. “We think we are fortunate to have a man with Lenz’s training and background to assume this important position in our community,” said Warren Rhodes, president of the hospital’s board of trustees. Lenz was in town this week visiting with trustees and making final arrangements for his new job, which was to begin September 4.
  • Allen Hoffman, plant manager of Cooperative Farm Chemicals Association, announced today that the company had found a pollution control system that was capable of cutting the opacity levels, or density, of smoke plumes from the plant’s towers to acceptable levels. Hoffman said that the new system would be satisfactory on a short-term basis and would be installed on one of the towers for a long-range study. However, he added that the device consumed a very large amount of energy, and plant technicians were still searching for a more efficient system.
