For those considering a home improvement project and wanting to cut costs, the City of Lawrence is distributing free paint, cleaning supplies and other items through its Product Reuse Program.

The city has an overabundance of products in good condition, including a variety of colors of Latex paint in five-gallon, gallon and quart containers.

The household, automotive and home improvement supplies are available to all residents of Douglas County. To set up an appointment to look over the items, contact the waste reduction and recycling division at 832-3030. Distribution is done on a first come, first serve basis.

For a full list of what may be available, go to the Product Reuse Program page at lawrenceks.org.

I guess it is a nice thing to do. But why is there so much extra in the first place? Just cut my taxes please and buy less.

jhawk1998: This is stuff that our community has cleared out of their garages and basements, not something the city has spent money on. It is keeping these things out our landfill. It is actually saving our city money, as they don't have to disponse of these things.

I'm pretty sure the paint is what they take in as Hazardous Waste. By appointment, you can turn in leftover paint, etc., to be used by others, reducing the amount of hazardous waste stored in homes or to be dumped, and helping city citizens who can take it to use. I don't know what all else is specifically in the other categories mentioned, but I would guess most of it has a similar history.

A best practice program. One of the few ways that the city is showing environmental stewardship. Now, let's get curbside recycling!
