25 years ago: Stranded fisherman rescued from dam

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 21, 1988:

  • Dale C. Kiener, 26, was rescued this morning by Lawrence firefighters and police officers after he had become trapped on the Kansas River dam while fishing. Kiener, 26, had walked from the north end of the dam and had been fishing for about an hour when several batterboards had broken at about midnight. According to Lawrence Fire Chief Jim McSwain, these boards were placed on the upstream face of the dam when the river was low and were used to divert water to the Bowersock Mill on the dam’s south end. Kiener had been trapped by the rushing water on the north side and couldn’t exit the dam to the south because of the water being diverted to that side of the dam. McSwain said that firefighters had launched a rubber boat from the Eighth Street boat ramp and rescued Kiener, who left behind two fishing poles, a Coleman lantern, and a bait bucket, valued together at about $115.
  • Texas authorities this week had linked a De Soto, Tex., homicide in 1977 to a man recently charged in Lawrence with the murder of a 9-year-old boy. John William, 27, was accused of killing Richard D. Settlemyre, whose body had been found at the Kansas River the preceding week. The Dallas Morning News today was reporting that William had told Texas law enforcement officials in February 1978 that he had been responsible for the 1977 death of 12-year-old LeWayne T. Dean.
