Letter: Valuable volunteers

To the editor:

How grateful we are that men and women take the time out of their busy schedules to volunteer for the different fire departments in the Tonganoxie/Lawrence area. We had big bales of hay catch fire this past week (July 12) after a truck carrying diesel fuel burned in the middle of the road. The flames quickly blew off the road and ignited our hay. The Tonganoxie, Sarcoxie and Fairmount Township departments responded and kept the fire under control even though the hay will smolder and burn for days. Tim Smith and his crew (Tongie) were great, along with Jay Alexander and his volunteers from Sarcoxie Township. After making sure the fire was contained, they assured us they would return periodically to check on it — and they did!

The Leavenworth Sheriff’s department was also thorough and helpful. Isn’t that what life is all about: reaching out and really caring for others through our day-to-day routines of life? Thank you, guys, for serving others with actions rather than just words. God bless.
