Police searching for suspects who fled accident scene at 100 mph

Lawrence police are looking for two people suspected of leaving the scene of a traffic accident today, near 31st Street and Haskell Avenue, and fleeing police at 100 mph.

The suspect vehicle, described as a blue Honda sedan, was first spotted by police about 12:37 p.m. today near 31st Street and Ousdahl Road speeding and driving recklessly, said Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman. The vehicle and its occupants were suspected of being involved in the theft of a cellphone at a Lawrence T-Mobile phone retailer at 1700 W 23rd St.

Police followed the Honda as it continued east on 31st Street. The vehicle broke a side mirror off of another vehicle as it turned north on Haskell Avenue, and fled east on 23rd Street at high speed, McKinley said.

Police called off the pursuit of the Honda as it reached speeds of 100 mph traveling east, out of Douglas County, on Kansas Highway 10. An officer with the Eudora Police Department recorded the Honda’s tag number, which police believe will lead them to a suspect in the Kansas City metro area, McKinley said. An arrest could lead to felony traffic charges.
