City announces tentative plan to hold open bidding for proposed $25M recreation center

Lawrence city officials have negotiated a new plan that calls for the proposed $25 million city recreation center in northwest Lawrence to be competitively bid through the city’s standard bidding process.

The tentative deal is a reversal from a previous proposal that would have limited the bidding process and would have given Lawrence builder Thomas Fritzel the ability to match any bid on the project.

The new development will put the bidding under the control of the city of Lawrence, whereas the previous plan would have been controlled by the Kansas University Endowment Association.

More details are forthcoming.
