A leaning Tower of Pisa is fine. A leaning totem pole along a busy Lawrence street near Interstate 70 is not.

Lawrence motorists may notice that a long-standing piece of public art along McDonald Drive between Sixth Street and Interstate 70 has gone missing.

City officials on Monday, though, said it will be making a return in about a week.

Diane Stoddard, assistant city manager, said parks and recreation crews have removed the tall piece of artwork for repair, but they expect to reinstall the piece by the end of next week.

“It has been leaning a bit,” said Stoddard. “We realized we couldn’t really adjust it without removing it and putting in a new base.”

The piece, which is titled Totem, has been up since 1993 when the city commissioned the work as part of its Percent for Art program, which uses a percentage of public building funds to purchase public art.

The piece was created by Doug Coffin, an American Indian sculptor and painter.
