All lanes have reopened on the Kansas Turnpike one mile east of the East Lawrence Interchange after an early-morning accident blocked traffic Friday morning, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Kim Qualls, a spokeswoman for KDOT, said the last closed eastbound lane was reopened about 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Firefighters responded to the accident about 4:20 a.m. Friday, after a semitrailer crashed and rolled on its side near mile marker 205, according to Journal-World news partner Operation 100.

Emergency dispatch received reports that the semitrailer was in the median, on fire, and showed “major damage.” The driver was out of the truck and told authorities the trailer tank was empty. He was transported by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.

Firefighters from Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical, the Wakarusa Township fire department and the Reno Township fire department of Leavenworth County were among those responding to the accident.

For more than an hour, traffic was forced to exit the turnpike near the accident while emergency crews worked, until about 6 a.m., when one lane of eastbound traffic and one lane of westbound traffic were opened. A second westbound lane was opened later in the morning.

While authorities worked on the scene, they reported there was significant debris across the highway and a diesel fuel leak. A Kansas Turnpike Authority representative was requested to respond to the scene.

KTA officials said it was unclear how long the roadway would remain blocked.
