25 years ago: Poll queries residents on second high school

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 22, 1988:

  • An opinion poll asking Lawrence residents their opinions on building a second high school in Lawrence showed a divided public. The poll showed that 28 percent surveyed said they favored a second school, 30 percent said the current building should be expanded, and 32 percent said that the district should work to develop a mid-high school/senior high school on one campus, therefore alleviating the need for a separate new high school. The telephone survey, conducted in mid-November by the SCR Council, had reached 415 Lawrence residents.
  • A water leak from a reactor seal had been the cause of a shutdown at the Wolf Creek nuclear power plant in Burlington. Utility officials said that the plant was expected to be closed for three weeks for maintenance. “No radiation was released and all shutdown systems operated correctly,” said Ron Smith, a spokesman for the utilities that owned the plant. He added that the utilities would either make up for the power loss from other plants they owned or would purchase power.
