A man was critically injured early Saturday morning in a single-vehicle accident in North Lawrence, according to Journal-World news partner Operation 100. Police and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews responded to the crash about 4:30 a.m. in the 1000 block of North Third Street and reported it appeared the vehicle had left the road and struck a tree nearly head-on. They found the driver, a man, pinned inside the vehicle and removed him.
The driver was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Municipal Airport, where a LifeStar helicopter transported him to a Kansas City-area hospital. Reports from the scene indicated the passenger did not appear to have life-threatening injuries and was able to walk away from the accident.
Other details of the the accident were not available Saturday morning, as police continued to investigate.

drove by this on my way to work. it was right there at the intersection for the toll both for the turnpike. the car looked pretty bad but after reading this my guess is most of the servere damages was caused by Lawrence-Douglas County Fire and Medical crews extricating the driver from the vehicle. hope it was just inatenative driving, but with dry pavement its probably a good guess that alcohol had a factor in this wreck.

Sending good wishes for the person's recovery, regardless of circumstances. If he was impaired, he should face charges when he's sufficiently recovered, but it's also possible he could have suffered a medical event (such as seizure or stroke).
I have noticed some curious wording in two LJW articles regarding similar accidents. To say, " A passenger in the vehicle did not report life-threatening injuries..." strikes me as odd. When someone DOES suffer life-threatening injuries, is it typical that they "report" such? Don't think so.
News stories of this nature usually opt for wording such as, "A passenger's injuries appeared to be minor," or "rescue workers described the passenger's injuries to be superficial," or whatever the case.

Authorities did not release much information about the passenger's condition today. Reports from the scene indicated they didn't appear to be critically injured.

Yeah, I get that--but it just strikes me as kinda funny wording to say that the person himself did not report life-threatening injuries. I would imagine that if he were suffering such grave injuries, he would be in no position to "report" them himself. :-)

---but tomorrow ... he/she may collapse with concussion.
agreed Py, the "not reporting life threatening injuries" wording is almost funny if you think about it.
I hope the driver recovers well, along with the tree.
