Free State boys fall in McPherson

? Free State High’s boys basketball squad gave a tough McPherson team all it could handle in the first half before falling, 53-44, on Thursday night in the first round of the McPherson Invitational.

“McPherson is a very good team on their home court and in their own tournament,” FSHS coach Chuck Law said. “I was really happy with how we played. I’m very pleased with how we competed.”

The Firebirds led 14-10 after one quarter and 22-20 at halftime, but McPherson (9-1) outscored FSHS 18-7 in the third quarter.

Khadre Lane led three Firebirds in double figures with 19 points. Cody Scott had 12 points, and Cole Moreano added 10.

Free State (2-7) will meet Hutchinson in a consolation-round game at 4:45 p.m. today.
