Lawrence man charged with eight sex crimes involving girl, now 11

A 41-year-old Lawrence man was charged Wednesday with eight felony sex crimes involving a girl who is now 11.

He is charged with three counts of rape, four counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and one count of aggravated criminal sodomy.

The man, who remains in Douglas County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond, covered his face with a paper document during a court hearing Wednesday via video from the jail.

Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman, said the victim is a juvenile female, but police are not releasing other details. In court on Wednesday, the victim was referred to by her initials and her date of birth, which indicates she is 11.

The crimes were reported to police Monday, McKinley said, and the man was arrested at police department’s offices in the 4800 block of Bob Billings Parkway. According to prosecutors, the series of crimes went on for almost four years, beginning in February 2009.

Each of the crimes the man is charged with carries a sentence of 25 years to life. He is being held in the Douglas County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
