40 years ago: Icy road sends truck off bridge

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 13, 1973:

  • A pickup truck driven by Ralph Eugene Flory, Baldwin, had gone through a bridge railing and down into the bed of the iced-over Coal Creek, two miles east of Haskell Road. Flory told county responders that the brakes had locked and he had lost control of the vehicle as he had approached the bridge.
  • For the first time in ten days, temperatures in Lawrence were expected to climb above the freezing mark today. The warming trend was due to continue through the week, providing a melting opportunity for the ice and snow that had been accumulating in the area this month.
