An 89-year-old Baldwin City woman was killed in a two-vehicle car accident Friday on Interstate 35, near 119th Street in Olathe.

Elaine E. Smith was traveling south on Interstate 35 in a 2003 Chevy Impala when she struck a 2010 GMC Denali that was stopped in traffic, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Smith was transported to Olathe Medical Center with fatal injuries. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the accident report.

The occupants of the Denali, a 36-year-old Olathe woman and two 6-year-old children, did not report life-threatening injuries at the scene. All three were wearing seat belts.

was 89 too old to be driving: hit a car stopped in traffic and not wearing her seatbelt?

when will we mandate physical driving testing for all drivers over a certain age, such as 65 years, for example?

of course I cannot know this is the cause of this accident. but I do know that over age drivers is a rapidly growing problem in our society.

Gnome...How can you make such a blanket statement? I agree that some older people don't have the reflexes they once had, but there are a lot of younger ones who don't pay any attention to what's going on, and can have the same kind of accident because they were talking on the phone, or texting, or screwing around with someone else (or their child) in the car. My condolences to Ms. Smith's loved ones on their loss.

Most people don't expect traffic to be a stop on the interstate.

I know that area of I-35 well as my wife works nearby. It's common to be very slow or stopped around 119th Street.

And good public transportation alternatives.
