40 years ago: City commission tries evening meeting time

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 8, 1973:

The Lawrence City Commission this week was experimenting with a new meeting time. Attempting to encourage public attendance and participation, commissioners were moving today’s meeting from its usual 2 p.m. slot to 7:30 p.m. The commission was intending to continue the experiment in February, but due to scheduling conflicts with Kansas University basketball games, the group had not yet set a meeting date. On tonight’s agenda was a discussion of a proposed sidewalk system for the area bounded by 19th, 23rd, Louisiana, and Iowa streets. Letters had been sent to all residents of that area informing them of the upcoming discussion. Also scheduled for discussion were recommendations from the East Lawrence citizens’ advisory committee on the use of federal Neighborhood Development Funds for housing rehabilitation projects and for the acquisition of a site near New York School for a neighborhood community center.
