Motorists on a portion of Massachusetts Street will need to adjust their routes next week.

City crews are planning to shut down the northbound lane of Massachusetts Street from Ninth Street to 10th Street on Monday and into Tuesday.

Crews will install a fire service line for the building at 918 Massachusetts St., which is being remodeled to house Chutneys Indian Diner and Bar.

Work is expected to be completed by Tuesday, but city officials said there is a chance the project could extend into Thursday.

Fire Protection Lines to buildings are commonly 6 inch inside nominal diameter or larger water pipes, that are a dedicated use and are specifically designed to supplying an inside of a given building, on the ceiling, etc., type fire sprinkler systems, for fire suppression ( only ) purposes .

In buildings where there is grease, ranges, cooking vents that might catch fire, in kitchen areas, additional fire suppression systems that use compressed inert gases, will be used in those greased areas, to keep from washing the fire along with fire sprinkler water.

Grease & oil float on water, even as they burn.......so water has its' place in a fire suppression plan.....just not everywhere .

Inert gases cut off a fires O2, so smothering it .......& can be extremely quick !

Ummmm. I believe a "fire service line" is to feed a in store fire system but I could be wrong. Be nice if the World expanded upon the term though.

A fire service lane will be a nice addition to that part of Mass St.

There is a crosswalk right next to there that I see cars, including a bus for disabled people, use as a place to stop and let people off. This causes a huge problem because then there is a vehicle stopped on the crosswalk, leaving a lane blocked. Then cars wanting to pass have to cross into the opposite lane while people wanting to cross the street are having to walk around the vehicle, causing a very potentially dangerous situation.
