Aquahawks openings: The Lawrence Aquahawks swimming team is always accepting new members. The Aquahawks are a year-round USA Swimming-sponsored competitive swim team. The Aquahawks offer a swim lesson program and competitive swim team for all ages. The Aquahawks are coached by professional coaches with weekly practices geared toward a variety of skill levels. Fast-pitch: A 12U fast-pitch softball team is looking for a first baseman and a utility player for the fall season. The team practices in the Lawrence area and has indoor facilities for winter. Contact coach Andrew at 785-840-7193.

U11 baseball seeking: Competitive U11 baseball team looking for one dedicated player for 2013 Season. Cannot turn 12 before May 1, 2013. Team will play in several tournaments. Contact for tryout information.

Five Tool league: Teams interested in playing in the Five Tool Softball league for teams 16U and under during the 2013 summer should contact Steve Seratte at 760-1446. The league is looking primarily for tournament teams.

Indoor baseball/softball practice facility: Big Springs Sports Center provides indoor batting cages and a large open turf area for team practices. For information, call 887-6700.

Winter Baseball Academy: Free State and Lawrence high schools will be hosting their winter baseball academy again this year. Players grades K-8 will have the opportunity to work on defense, pitching, catching and hitting Sunday evenings at LHS and Free State. Dates are Jan. 13, 20 and 27 and Feb. 10, 17 and 24. Salvation Army league: The AAU Salvation Army Basketball Draft League will run January through March and is taking coaching applications. All players who register and participate in tryouts will be placed on a league team. There will be one or two practices a week and one game a week for two coed leagues: D-1 (fourth and fifth grades) and D-2 (grades 1-3). Tryouts will be Jan. 12 and 13 at the East Lawrence Rec Center. LPRD registrations: The Lawrence Parks & Recreation boys middle school intramural basketball and USD 497 registration deadline is Jan. 10 for grades 6-8. Practices will begin the week of Jan. 21, with games beginning Feb. 2. For information, call 832-7940.

LPRD coaches needed: Lawrence Parks & Rec needs volunteer coaches for its K-6 indoor soccer (futsal) and boys 6-8 intramural basketball programs. FUNdamental Softball: Learn the proper mechanics and techniques to play softball. Jayhawk Baseball Camps: The Jayhawk Baseball Camp has different camp options for area youth in the coming months — four-week hitting, pitching and catching academies January-April; a Sunday night baseball school in January; and a two-day spring training camp in March. Softball fundraiser: Free State High softball will hold a biscuits and gravy fundraiser from 8-11 a.m. on Jan. 26 at Free State High. Cost is $, and all proceeds go to Free State softball. Tickets available at the door. For information, call Free State office at 832-6050.

Wheelhawks tournament: Kansas Wheelhawks will host a tournament this weekend at the East Lawrence Rec Center, 1245 East 15th Street. Games are at 8:30, 10, 11:30 a.m. and 1, 2:30 and 4 p.m. Saturday, and 8:30, 10 and 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday. Volunteers needed to run the shot clock and scoreboard and keep the scorebook.

MAYB tournament: MAYB will host a basketball tournament in Lawrence for boys and girls in third through eighth grades on Jan. 19. There is a three-game guarantee, and the cost is $165. Games will be played at Lawrence High and Free State. For more info visit
