25 years ago: Bank robber escapes with ‘undisclosed amount’

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 2, 1988:

  • A robber armed with a handgun and wearing a Halloween mask had held up the Douglas County Bank branch at 15th and Kasold Drive, escaping with an undisclosed amount of money. Investigators had blocked the entrance to the bank this morning and police officers were searching the surrounding neighborhoods for the suspect.
  • A 26-year-old Lawrence man was killed this week when he was struck by a Union Pacific train on a trestle about a mile and a half east of the Mud Creek Bridge, northeast of Lawrence. The man had been hunting on the west end of the trestle with his 16-year-old nephew when the accident had occurred.
