40 years ago: Public to help decide Clinton use

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 27, 1973:

  • A public meeting was scheduled this week for the Citizens Coalition for Clinton. The coalition hoped to determine the local consensus on recreational planning for the Clinton Reservoir development, then under construction four miles southwest of Lawrence. Scheduled to be discussed at the first meeting was water use and water recreation development for the 7,000-acre lake.
  • Late February was not considered too early to begin plowing and getting some things into the ground, according to an observation of the activities of some local garden enthusiasts in North Lawrence. One veteran gardener there reminded the Journal-World today that “when the leaf on the hedge gets as big as the ears on a squirrel, it’s safe.” The leaves and the squirrel-ears were apparently coming into agreement this week, as evidenced by the increase in gardening north of the bridge.
