KU softball cruises past winless Southern, 14-0

? Kansas University scored 14 runs on 14 hits and held winless Southern to just one hit in five run-ruled innings on Saturday at the Islanders Softball Classic.

Junior Alex Jones (3-0, seven strikeouts, three walks) picked up the shutout victory for Kansas, which improved to 3-0 at the tournament and 10-3 overall. Kendyl Stevenson took the loss for Southern (0-14).

Sophomore catcher Maddie Stein led the Jayhawks on offense, tallying a career-high six RBIs on 3-for-6 batting, including two doubles. Junior second baseman Alex Newman was a perfect 3-for-3, and a pair of freshmen knocked in home runs for the Jayhawks. Catcher/designated player Alex Hugo blasted a three-run homer in the top of the first, and pinch hitter Kylee Kennedy hit a two-run home run in her first career at-bat, in the top of the fifth.

Kansas will go for a sweep of the Islanders Classic at 9 a.m. today against New Mexico.
