LHS wrestlers 10th after Round 1

? Lawrence High sat in 10th place at the Class 6A state wrestling tournament at Hartman Arena in Wichita. Due to inclement weather, the tournament start time was delayed until 4 p.m. on Friday, pushing the semifinals to today.

The headliners for the Lions are Alan Clothier at 170 pounds and Andrew Denning at 182 pounds. Clothier pinned his first-round opponent and earned a major decision over Isiah Hardeman of Wichita East, 11-0, to earn a berth in today’s semifinal versus Garden City’s Anthony Gardner. Clothier, a freshman, is 41-3 on the season, the best record in the 170-pound weight class.

Andrew Denning also won two matches on Friday. Denning, 40-4 this season, meets Topeka’s undefeated Austin Tillman (21-0) in the semifinals today.

Xavier Kenney (106), Caden Lynch (138), Ryan Bellinger (152) and Alex Jones (285) remain in contention on the backside of the bracket for Lawrence. Ben Soukup (152), Sam Skwarlo (160) and Sterling Ozark (285) are still alive for Free State, which is in 26th place.
