Purim celebration open to community

A communitywide Purim celebration will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Lawrence Visitor Center, 402 N. Second St.

Participants will be treated to Mediterranean dishes, and have opportunities to make candles and take a picture next to a replica of the Western Wall in Jerusalem.

The event celebrates the Jewish holiday of Purim, which commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people from the Persian Empire. The holiday is traditionally celebrated by dressing up in costume, and event-goers are encouraged to follow suit. There will be prizes for those with the most innovative or funny costumes.

The celebration is open to people of all religious affiliations. An RSVP is required.
