From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 20, 1988:

Members of the Secondary Schools Facilities Task Force visited Lawrence High School today, standing at an intersection of two busy hallways to get a firsthand look at crowding at “rush hour.” LHS Principal Brad Tate, who was also a task force member, had suggested that the group experience a class change during a tour of the school, saying that it would be a good way for members to see what the hallways were like when the nearly 1,800 students rushed to their classes during their six-minute break. The task force was studying options to ease overcrowding, including building a second high school, adding onto the current building, or establishing a mid-high school/senior high school. In the last option, one building would be for ninth- and tenth-graders, and the other would be for juniors and seniors. Such a school could be on the current 40-acre site at 19th and Louisiana, or one of the buildings could be built on the 50 acres of vacant district-owned land near 15th and Wakarusa.
