Aggressively bizarre, yet undeniably sweet, “Adventure Time” (6:30 p.m., Cartoon Network) mixes the kind of hallucinogenic shape-shifting found in “stoner” cartoons with an innocent “My Little Pony” sensibility. It also features strange self-contained fairy tales, or in the case of tonight’s “Adventure,” stories within stories, retold and re-edited by their narrator as they continue.

In tonight’s story, “Bad Little Boy,” the sassy yet sensible Fionna sparks up a friendship with a teenage guitar-playing slacker who just happens to be a prince of the vampire realm. The references to “Twilight” are obvious, yet unstated. “Adventure” doesn’t feel the need to hit you over the head with pop culture jokes like “Family Guy” does. I find it delicious to think that the core audience for this show might consider Seth MacFarlane’s cartoons for “old people.”

• “Inside Combat Rescue” (9 p.m., National Geographic) profiles members of a helicopter medical team who retrieve wounded soldiers, often under intense enemy fire. The filmmakers had unique access to this Air Force medical unit during a recent deployment to Kandahar, Afghanistan.
