From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 18, 1973:

• Items valued at $5,966 had been stolen during the past weekend from a rental house in Baldwin. A door lock had been broken to gain entrance, according to the investigating deputy of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department. Two cameras valued at $200 had been taken, as well as other photographic equipment costing $500, a $1,700 diamond ring, a piggy bank containing about $1,500, jewelry, two television sets, and other miscellaneous personal and household items.
• About 1,000 people were expected to attend the third annual Jayhawk Kiwanis Chili Day this coming weekend. The event, to be held in the Lawrence High School cafeteria, had attracted an estimated 600 patrons the previous year. Most of the proceeds from Sunday’s event were to be donated to Cottonwood, Inc., a newly-opened training center for adults with developmental disabilities, said Charles Hule, event co-chairman. Smaller donations were to be made to city, county, and state community activities.
